Riesling

This new project from the granite soils in the northern end of the Macedon Ranges at 460m above sea level is an exciting addition to our activities. The vineyard was established in 1995 and the fruit has ostensibly been “lost” interstate until new Victorian owners took over in spring 2021. The new regime has quickly invested in the infrastructure and fine-tuned activities and several top producers are sourcing fruit from this excellent site. Wine Advocate 95 points. The 2023 Alea Riesling leads with roasted pineapple, green apples, hints of lychee and juniper, lemon oil and coriander. The fruit is a little quieter this year, but it's no less "present." James Suckling 97 points. A piercing wine that has such intense and focused lime fruit, as well as sweetly fragrant floral notes. Spellbinding intensity to the nose here. The palate sings with clarity and bright, vivid acidity drives pure lime-juice flavors long and fresh. Full of energy and a real powerhouse. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

James Halliday Wine Companion, 95/100 Certified organic and biodynamic. A high-tension, fragrant Springvale release. Bright, floral perfume of lime blossom, ozone, blackcurrant and green apple. A strong spectrum of citrus flavours are the currency here: lemon, lime and a squirt of pulpy grapefruit zing with a faintly yeasty, almond-like character to finish. Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front, AUG23 96 Points Well, seriously, the 2023 Grosset rieslings are wonderful. This has you at hello. It’s structured and a touch reserved but there’s decent flavour both at the outset and throughout and then the finish, well, it saves its best for last. This wine really does seal the deal. Chalk, lime, fennel, a grainy/skinsy aspect to the finish but this is a wine of great fruit purity, finesse and finish. It’s delicious. It impresses with its structure. From older vines off the Mort Block. This is tightly packed riesling, concentrated and super, extra lemon-limey, a racy number with high refreshment factor and stacks of get up and go. Good perfume that delivers all that citrus but quite a lot of florals in jasmine and lemon blossom too. A little chalkiness to the texture is also a treat. Finishes long, fine and squeaky, with near eye-watering briskness of minerally acidity. Hits the spot.  93 points, Mike Bennie Published 07 August 2024

A potent and powerful riesling of deep concentration, strong lime-lemon citrus influence in both fresh fruit and floral components. Some blackcurrant faintly in there, Granny Smith apple too, with flickers of sweet spice, mint and dill herbal elements. It races across the palate, tightly wound, if not a little too dry and bony, restraining fruit flavour a tad, finishing a touch short. Jeni Port 96 points. A natural cool beauty, Watervale combines stunning aromatics – apple blossom, white flowers – with lingering aromas of Tahitian lime, lemon, grapefruit. Citrus and talc florals work hand in hand here. Soft, textural acidity offers a solid foundation for the brisk lemony brightness and lime cordial intensity of the fruit. And it lasts and lasts on a long, clean finish. Guess you might say I fell hard for this young riesling. A classic riesling vintage in the Clare Valley is a thing to behold.
